With helpful hints from the J Blanton team!

When we picture the average basement, images of dusty boxes, water heaters and chipping paint may come to mind. However; with a little TLC, you could repurpose this extra space into the perfect gathering area. Consider these 4 ways you can improve your basement, and keep family comfortable while impressing your guests!

Basement improvements.

Sump Pump: Because Chicago has such a high water table, there is a chance you may experience some flooding in your basement. However; do not let this discourage you from creating the bonus room of your dreams. Sump pumps are extremely effective in keeping water out of your home by detecting when water is accumulating underground- and threatening to invade your basement. This way, you will be able to drain the water before it can do any damage, rather than finding a way to remove it.

In addition to preventing flood damage, allowing even small amounts of water into your home can lead to mold and mildew growth, which produces an unpleasant smell, and can even pose health risks. And though it may seem ironic, flooding is also one of the most common causes of electrical fires within the home. These fires can start due to blown fuses in anything from washing machines, to water heaters. A sump pump will greatly reduce any chance of water reaching your home appliances.

Waterproofing: To add some added protection, you may want to consider waterproofing your home. If your basement has any openings through its walls, floors or even concrete, water can easily seep in through the cracks. This is why basements are known to be damp and humid. This environment is no place to host your next party! Luckily, there are many ways to keep water from slipping through the cracks. If you’re looking for a reliable and easy way to waterproof your basement, you may want to consider a drain tile/french drain! These handy drain lines are installed in your basement floor, and threatening water is sent to a pump that pumps water away from your home.

Alternatively; for homes where a drain tile will is not the most convenient option, there is the option of a flood control system. A backwater valve is installed in your home’s main sewer line. During storms when rainfall is especially heavy, the backwater valve closes, and prevents water from backing up.

Storage: Have too much clutter than you know what to do with? Consider converting your empty basement into a state of the art organization station! Curtains and built-ins are easy ways you can DIY your way to a mess-free home. Many people choose to store extra belongings in plastic tubs, which are not exactly pleasing to the eye. You may want to install a curtain to divide your basement between living and storage space. This way, you get the best of both worlds! A curtain provides an aesthetically pleasing route to dividing your living space, without paying for wall to wall construction.

It is also common for people to dump extraneous belongings under the stairs, and ignore them because out of sight out of mind, right? However; modular storage spaces are a creative and pragmatic solution to filling this awkward space. Just take some wooden crates of varying sides, and paint the back of each to your liking. Then simply stack them on top of each other to create a modern and beautiful background!

Another Bathroom: If you’re looking to sell, adding an additional bathroom in your renovated basement provides significant value! Whether you’re turning your basement into a playroom, extra bedroom, or home gym area, a new bathroom will make life a lot more convenient.
